Get Ready to Paint 2019!

Join the Plein Air Painters Chicago for this robust, one-day program. Whether a seasoned painter or new to the field, you’ll leave eager for the PAPC’s painting season to begin. Blick’s Artist in Residence, Joseph Gyurcsak will demonstrate and discuss how to prepare for paint outs, capture scenes and leave enough time to finish a complete painting. Besides talking about his approach, he’ll discuss methods, techniques and materials. Guest Artist and award winner, Steve Puttrich will provide a perspective for the entire season ahead and offer a demo for consideration. Eric Rhoads, Publisher of Plein Air Magazine will provide his view of trends in plein air painting. We’ve asked Guest Artist Nancy King Mertz, who besides a being an internationally renowned artist, owns Art d’ Triumph, Custom Framing, to demonstrate how to frame in the field during a quick paint, and, what to consider when framing for exhibition. Finally, if you still have questions, a panel of Guest Artists will answer them. Mary Longe and Steve Puttrich will co-host the day.

Mary Longe will provide and overview of the day and Steve Puttrich will guide us make sense of what we hear and learn to improve our painting experience and paintings. 


9:30  The Artist Mindset

Blank surface, clean brushes or pastels, complex scene in your sights, how do you prepare and proceed to capture the scene during the time limits of a paint-out? Blick Art Material’s Joseph Gyurcsak AIS, ISAP, BBS Resident Artist will demonstrate his approach, supplies, and techniques for creating a satisfying alla prima response which captures the essence of the scene, in the time allotted. You will learn about palette organization, controlling color mixing with harmony, chasing the light and dealing with weather challenges. PAPC Host: Laurie Kennard

Supplies and techniques provide the essentials of making art. Each person brings a unique perspective, creative spirit, personal story, interests, skills, and intention that determine what becomes their art. 1:00 Beyond Chicago - Perspective on Plein Air: A Conversation with Eric Rhoads

What in the world is going on with Plein Air? You’re going to find out listening to Eric Rhoads whose enterprises encourage and enable the fine arts and especially plein air painting through stories, education, and other media communications. He’ll discuss trends in painting, collectors, and, competition winners. An avid plein air painter himself, we’ll hear stories about painting with great artists many featured in Plein Air magazine, as well as some favorite locations. PAPC Host: Mary Longe


1:30 Completing a Painting 

Artist Critique Joseph Gyurcsak AIS, ISAP, BBS Blick Art Materials, Resident Artist

Your painting must be in the judge’s hands in less than an hour. When and how do you step back to evaluate and put your best effort forward for competition (or Critique.)  You’ll learn how to look at your painting with fresh eyes, the questions to ask yourself and how to make the best use of the short time available. Building on the Artist Mindset session, Joseph Gyurcsak will review five quick-paint submissions (un touched once submitted) from participants and show how to assess your paintings. 2:30 Framing – For Quick Paints and Shows – Nancy King Mertz  

Internationally renowned artist, PAPC member and Invited Guest Artist, and Owner of Art de Triumph, Custom Framing Studio, Nancy King Mertz will share and show how she wires and frames paintings in the field under pressure of time, and how she readies her art for exhibits.  PAPC Host: Jerry Stevens


3:15   Q&A Panel with Seasoned Plein Air Painters 

Ask your pressing questions of our panel of experienced plein air artists. Methods, supplies, process… no question is irrelevant. PAPC Host: Barbara Herring


4:00  The 2019 Plein Air Season 

Mary Longe and team will reveal the 2019 Paint Out locations, Guest Artists and Exhibits. Hear about the nocturne scene we secured on a rooftop with a 360 degree view of the city, and the prestigious exhibit opportunity at the Elmhurst Art Museum, the potlucks, and, new and returning Guest Artists. We're painting Chicago, one brushstroke at a time.
